This was very long time back. I had just completed my higher secondary and had gone to the employment exchange in Hyderabad. I was just sitting out in the open outside the exchange when a young man neatly dressed came over to me asking me if I can help him to write a letter to the employment exchange officer for the delay in his renewal (those days, I think, the renewal of your name in the exchange had to be done every six months).
I was very happy to help someone in distress. I wrote a neat letter explaining the (imaginary) reasons for the delay of some 15 days. And as I was about to hand over the completed letter I asked this guy, out of some unease, who he was and what his qualifications were.
To my shock he said he is a B.Com graduate. I couldn’t believe my ears as he seemed to be very shy of writing a simple letter while I was then an under graduate. I thought he could be from Telugu medium. But he said he was from English medium and from Badruka College. It shocked me and shook me.
OF COURSE I FAILED TO ASK this fair-looking man IF HE WAS A QUOTA GUY THOUGH HE — IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT — SEEMED TO BE A TELUGU BRAHMIN.
