COMING a CROPPER ON OROP?

OROP or ‘one rank, one pension’ is basically making pension uniform regardless of when a soldier retires for the same rank and length of service. In other words pension is to be made as a post-dated cheque to be encashed even if issued 20 years ago. Can one compare the standard of living 20 years ago to today?

Date of retirement naturally determines how much pension one gets. With each Pay Commission every 10 years pension goes up and this has caused heart burn to many who had retired in the past. OROP seems to be a form of NEW social justice making a sepoy who retired 20 years ago (say one retiring merely a day before the setting up of a new pay panel and getting the future benefits) to one who retired much,much later.

It seems, if I am not mistaken, OROP is set to open Pandora’s box affecting our DEFENCE preparedness as paramilitary forces too are demanding the same benefit and could mutiny in future given the ambience of Quota India. And what about the civil defence personnel (like Defence Accounts men) whose number too are massive and who too would love a uniform approach? Where will it stop? I wish the real experts take an holistic view on this.

To implement OROP there is MASSIVE burden of over Rs 8,000 crore annually to cater to 13-lakh-strong armed forces. Adding nine-lakh-strong paramilitary forces could make the Quota government run begging for mercy.

The way everyone is equating OROP with PATRIOTISM is somewhat strange. {THIS SORT OF SLY PATRIOTISM WAS USED SNEAKINGLY by antinational Congress TO MAKE SACHIN A BHARAT RATNA and garner votes from those who recite CRICKET KALIMA }.

Military personnel are a class apart as they get everything at heavily subsidized rates from liquor to a two-wheeler or even a car. IN CONTRAST CIVILIANS BLEED THROUGH THEIR NOSES AS EVERYTHING, EXCEPT THE AIR THEY BREATHE, IS TAXED and taxed and taxed by a heartless Quota India.

JOINING ARMY IS not for the weak or for faint-hearted or for earning a fat salary. IT IS A PROFESSIONAL HAZARD. RETIREMENT has to COME EARLY AT 35 or else A SOLDIER AT 60 will be mocked by our enemies.

THEN WHY MAKE THE PROFESSIONAL HAZARD A BARGAINING CHIP? SOME SOLDIERS COMPARE THEMSELVES WITH their COUNTERPARTS IN CANADA OR THE US and then cry foul. THE US AND CANADA ARE CLASS APART. THOSE ARE SUPER RICH COUNTRIES.

LET US BE SENSIBLE. PENSION HAS TO BE CALCULATED AT THE PREVAILING RATE NOT WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE 20 YEARS HENCE. IF OROP COMES it will make time travel easy as one gets the latest pension not simply incremental amounts of DA as at present changing the gamut of the way economy functions.

PATRIOTISM DOES NOT MEAN — DESPITE BEING INFESTED WITH QUOTA LOGIC — that everyone should treat ARMY as holy cow or BE SCARED TO DEBATE about the pros and cons including the OROP which is giving a POST-DATED cheque that KEEPS CHANGING LIKE A GLACIER with every new Pay Commission.

Army is certainly not COMMERCE. MAKING IT A COMMERCE SHOULD NOT BE AT THE COST OF REASON.
